Add a nice background picture so your profile doesn't look too boring.
On your LinkedIn profile you should write a few lines about yourself, about your course, a short summary using bullet points will look more professional.
Add to it an experience section.
A brief concise paragraph, think about the employer, they are busy.
When you want to connect to someone you should add a note saying for instance:- I met you at so and so and say why you would like to connect or I would like to be part of your network because?
It's a good way to approach employers.
Don't make it all about you, make it about the person you are trying to connect with, I met you at?, I found you? I'd like to? or you could say I am studying at? on this particular course and I would to connect with you because?
Add a skills and endorsement section.
You can join groups for recommendations or endorsements.
